  • HEADACHES

One of the most common causes of pain are headaches. They have a wide range of severity and can develop into more chronic or severe issues that ultimately impact your function in everyday life. It is important to figure out what type of headache you are suffering from in order to find the most effective way to treat it.

    TENSION HEADACHES

Tension headaches are one of the most common types of headaches and can be categorized as episodic or chronic. They are often described as a tight band of pressure wrapping around your scalp that often leads to pain around your entire head and leads to pain even traveling into your neck.

    COMMON SYMPTOMS ASSOCIATED WITH HEADACHES

    ● Dull head and neck pain

    ● Pressure around your skull

    ● Muscle tenderness of the neck, head, and/or shoulders

    ● Inability to focus

    ● Poor sleeping

    MIGRAINES

Migraines are a common type of headache that are most often identified by throbbing and increased pain on one or both sides of the head. Other symptoms can include sensitivity to certain sounds, lights, or even smells. Migraines can last for hours or possibly even days and usually go through different stages of progression. It is helpful to identify individual triggers for migraines to help prevent future episodes, and to seek treatment to control the severity of the migraine.

    COMMON MIGRAINE TRIGGERS

    ● Stress

    ● Certain lights, sounds, or smells

    ● Weather changes

    ● Change in sleeping pattern

    ● Medications

    ● Certain foods

    ● Caffeine or Alcohol

    CLUSTER HEADACHES

Cluster headaches commonly affect one side of the head only and are usually most painful behind one eye. The degree of pain associated with cluster headaches is often severe and usually requires co-management of care between your medical doctor, neurologist, and chiropractor.

  • ELBOW/WRIST PAIN

    ELBOW

The elbow is a hinge joint and allows the hand and forearm to flex, extend, and rotate. When you experience pain in your elbow it can often be a sign that you have an injury to the upper arm, elbow, or forearm. Most often, elbow pain develops due to overuse. Many of the daily movements we perform in jobs, activities, and sports require the repetitive use of hand, wrist, and arm movements that over time can create wear and tear damage to the soft tissues and elbow joint.

One of the most common conditions relating to elbow pain is tendonitis. Overuse and repetitive activities often lead to injury of the tendons, which are the structures that attach muscles to bones. Activities like gardening, using a screwdriver, typing, and participation in competitive sports can often lead to the development of this condition.

COMMON CAUSES AND CONDITIONS ASSOCIATED WITH ELBOW PAIN

Lateral Epicondylitis - Injury to the tendons on the lateral or outside aspect of the elbow. With this injury most often occurring in people who play racquet sports, it is appropriately referred to as “Tennis Elbow.”

Medial Epicondylitis - Injury to the tendons on the medial or inside aspect of the elbow. This injury is most commonly seen in golfers and baseball players. It is also referred to as “Golfer’s Elbow.

    Arthritis

    Sprain/Strains

    Cubital Tunnel Syndrome

    WRISTS

The wrist is made up of a network of bones, ligaments, muscles, nerves, and connective tissue. They are the connection between our arms and hands and allow them the ability to lift, bend, and rotate. This wide range of movement makes the wrist more susceptible to injury.

Most wrist injuries are the result of either overuse or trauma; however, it is also possible that wrist pain can develop due to conditions like arthritis. Wrist pain is common amongst athletes and workers alike. Activities like typing, writing, repetitive movements, tennis, gymnastics, and weightlifting can be hard on the wrist joint.

COMMON CAUSES AND CONDITIONS ASSOCIATED WITH WRIST PAIN

    Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
    Fractures
    Sprain/Strains
    Arthritis
    Tendonitis

When a wrist or elbow injury occurs, pain is typically one of the first symptoms to appear. The level of pain can vary from mild to severe and often be described as sharp, burning, aching, or dull.

COMMON SYMPTOMS OF ELBOW OR WRIST INJURY

Stiffness or reduced range of motion
    Swelling
    Tenderness
    Grip weakness/Loss of strength
    Loss of coordination
Numbness or tingling into hands for fingers
    Redness or discoloration

  • HIP PAIN

The hip joint is one of the largest and most mobile joints in the body. Like the shoulder, it is a ball and socket joint which allows for a wide range of motion. The ligaments, muscles and connective tissue surrounding the joint all have to work together for the joint to function properly.

Hip pain can develop from the joint itself or one of the many surrounding structures and can typically result from acute trauma or overuse. Overuse injuries typically involve the muscles, tendons, and ligaments around the joint. Another reason you may experience hip pain is due to referred pain. This means that the problem may originate from somewhere else but is felt in or around the hip.

COMMON CAUSES AND CONDITIONS ASSOCIATED WITH HIP PAIN

    Hip Strain/Sprain
    IT Band Syndrome
    Piriformis Syndrome
    Hip Impingement
    Trochanteric Bursitis

Most leg pain is due to trauma or overuse to the muscles, ligaments, tendons, nerves, and other soft tissues. Repetitive use activities like jumping, kicking, and running can often be the source of these overuse injuries. Pain can also present itself due to inactivity. Weak muscles from lack of use or damage to the involved nerves can also contribute to significant leg pain.

COMMON CAUSES AND CONDITIONS ASSOCIATED WITH LEG PAIN

    Hamstring Muscle Strain
    Adductor (Groin) Muscle Strain
    IT Band Syndrome
    Quadriceps Muscle Strain
    Calf Strain
    Shin Splints
    Patellar Tendonitis
    Sciatica
    Achilles Tendonitis

COMMON SYMPTOMS OF A LEG INJURY

Decreased flexibility and reduced range of motion
Spasm or cramps in the leg muscles
Radiating or traveling pain in the leg
    Pain when bearing weight
Aching, dull pain that increases with movement

  • KNEE PAIN

The knee joint is a large joint that is made up of ligaments, tendons, and other soft tissue. It is heavily involved with lower body movements which puts it at high risk for overuse injuries. Certain activities performed during sports, work or other recreational activities can increase a person’s risk for developing knee injuries with age. Acute trauma to the knee can also be a reason knee pain occurs. Sudden direct blows, twisting, excessive bending, or falling on the knee can be a source of acute pain and injury.

COMMON CAUSES AND CONDITIONS ASSOCIATED WITH KNEE PAIN

    Knee Sprain/Strain
    Knee Arthritis
    IT Band Syndrome
    Patellar tendonitis
    Knee Bursitis

    COMMON SYMPTOMS OF KNEE PAIN

Pain described as dull, aching, stiffness, sharp, or severe
    Swelling or bruising
    Local or diffuse (widespread) pain
    Difficulty or pain walking
    Locking of the knee joint
    Compensation due to another injury

    ANKLE PAIN

The ankle joint is an extremely mobile joint allowing for movement in all directions while also supporting the weight of the body. It is made up of many ligaments, muscles, and tendons that help provide stability to the joint. When an abnormal movement like twisting or rolling the foot happens and stretches the joint beyond the normal range, injury occurs. Sprain (injury to the ligament) and Strain (injury to the tendon) injuries are the most common ankle injuries. These injuries often occur when playing sports or when simply stepping down from an elevated surface during normal daily activity. If you have had a severe ankle sprain in the past it is certainly easier to sprain the ankle again due to a weakened support structure and ankle instability.

COMMON CAUSES AND CONDITIONS ASSOCIATED WITH ANKLE PAIN

Ankle Sprain - Stretching or tearing of the ankle ligaments

Ankle Strain - Stretching or tearing of the tendons around the ankle

COMMON SYMPTOMS ASSOCIATED WITH ANKLE INJURY

Pain range from mild to severe
    Swelling
    Muscle spasms
    Joint instability
    Joint stiffness
    Bruising
    Difficulty with walking

    FOOT PAIN

The feet are supportive and flexible structures that consist of multiple bones, joints, muscles, ligaments, and other soft tissues. They help keep us upright when walking, standing, participating in sports, and most other daily activities. The network of structures that make up the feet allow them to absorb the forces from the rest of the body during movement. Foot pain typically is the result of overuse, poor mechanics, or acute injury.

COMMON CAUSES AND CONDITIONS ASSOCIATED WITH FOOT PAIN

    Plantar fasciitis
    Achilles tendonitis
